The Tipping Point
  by Malcolm Gladwell
The Diva Review:

This is a fascinating book! Part of what makes it so amazing though is that Gladwell writes in a way that almost makes you feel like you're out to dinner with him. Or having coffee. Like he's a really cool friend who has all of this amazing information to share. And the best part is, he backs it up with interesting stories and research, data and conclusions that have you on the edge of your figurative seat.

Haven't you always wondered what makes a trend take off? In my part of the world the general belief is that a celebrity wore it or used it or talked about it. Or, the cool taste makers on the hip side of town are doing it. It's such a relief to know that there is more to it that that. Or, why did crime in New York City suddenly plunge? Hmmm. Why, despite all efforts to prevent it, are more teens smoking today than ever? The answers and conclusions that Gladwell presents are sound. They make sense and they open up a whole new way of looking at the world. This is exactly the kind of book I love. Even if he's wrong (and I don't think he is), he sure takes you on a fun ride.

You can take it a step further and try to figure out why the music you hate is suddenly an established genre or why women, regardless of figure or weather, are all wearing midriff bearing tops. What Gladwell does is demystify the origin of "trend" but at the same time, keeps you wanting to know more.
