Symptoms of Withdrawl
  by Christopher Lawford
The Diva Review:

I'm not typically drawn to overblown confessions or addiction recovery stories, but I read a review of this book and thought I'd give it a shot. And I hate to admit, but I too have a tiny fascination with the Kennedys. Just tiny. I mean, doesn't everyone?? Anyway, the first and most important thing I learned while reading this book is, why, dear friend, I write reviews. It's to save you from this fate.

Within the first three pages I developed an impression of Mr. Lawford as a whiny, self-absorbed, narcissist with a ridiculously over inflated view of himself and his own importance. I'm sorry to say that by the end of the book, my impression was even less favorable. If I had a dime for every time this guy believed that the whole world was watching him I could have paid for the book - and a sledge hammer to hit myself over the head with to make reading it more bearable.

As the son of Pat Kennedy and Peter Lawford, Christopher Lawford was, undeniably, born into unique circumstances. He says that at the time of his birth, the American dream was fulfilled for him. Wel.... Jeez. He then goes on to describe (in painful detail) his life growing up at the beach in Santa Monica with nannies. While this was semi-interesting, he seems to think that he was the only person in the world with a nanny and that this fact alone, really separated him from the rest of the plebian world. Ho hum. I'm here to tell you that lots of people, especially in Los Angeles, have nannies.

We then go on to learn about his misspent youth. Again, sort of interesting and even a little funny. But to wade through page after page of self-aggrandizing drivel was almost too much for this reader. For example I find it difficult to believe that at the funeral of a very prominent Kennedy, everyone in the world was looking at him, as he clearly seems to feel. I mean really! This guy is such an idiot.

The book is supposed to be about addiction and redemption but the fact that this guy is so completely taken with himself and his family, dilutes the message.

It also seems like he has a chip on his shoulder because his last name is Lawford, and not Kennedy.

This poor guy. I'm happy that he found sobriety, but he's really got to get over himself.
