The Diva Review:
8 Ball takes a look at the phenomenon of girl gangs in three different US cities. It's pretty well written and quite well researched. Sikes tends to get closer to her subjects than a lot of writers do in documenting people's lives, which gives the book a less than objective perspective. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It makes the book less clinical than many books of this type.
Sikes takes a close look at girls in gang life in Los Angeles, San Antonio and Milwaukie. Interestingly, the gangs are quite different in each city. There are some surprising connections made, some tragic revelations, and a lot of bad decisions chronicled. It also highlights the fact that very little attention is paid to this very real issue. Girl gangs are not gang-lite. These girls are involved in very serious situations with drugs, guns and violence at the hands of men and other girls.
If you're interested in girl gangs, gang culture or the sociological impact of gangs in cities, this is a good read.
