The Diva Review:

Joe Pike is hot. There is no question about it. Part of his hotness is the fact that he's such an enigma. The other part is that he's simply hot. This is Pike's first starring role in a novel. He’s usually the strong, silent partner to Elvis Cole in Robert Crais' successful series of Elvis Cole mysteries. Although Pike has been developed as a character in the previous books, it might have been a risky choice to put him front and center. A lesser writer might not have been able to pull it off. But Crais does.

In The Watchman, Joe is hired to protect a wealthy young heiress who accidentally ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong time and sees the wrong thing. Though spoiled and selfish, she decides to step up and be a witness. Naturally, this makes her a target and she must be hidden away and protected. By the best. Joe typically would never do this sort of work, but he owes a favor. And of course, Joe always pays his debts. The book takes us through Pike doing what he has to do to protect his charge. And, basically, he's hot.

You really can't go wrong with a Robert Crais novel. This one allows us to get to know Pike a little better. But just a little. Not so much that we really "know" him, but enough to keep us intrigued. Naturally, there are twists and turns, cover ups and corruption, and we're treated to a cameo by Elvis Cole himself. It’s fast paced, fun and all in all a very satisfying read.
