The Diva Review:
If you have boys, work with boys or, are responsible for boys in any way, this is the one book you should read. Without question. Kindlon and Thompson have synthesized 35 years of research, observation and experience into an amazingly compelling "handbook" on how to raise boys to be strong, good, emotionally healthy men. This is, surprisingly, much more difficult than it seems.
It's amazing how much more complex boys' emotional lives are than popular wisdom would have us believe. Our society has trained us to see boys and their needs in a very limited way. And then we wonder why men have such a hard time dealing with their emotions. Traditionally, it's been about "sucking it up and being a man," or "manning up" and that has done no end of harm to male psyches. Teaching boys about their emotions, and how to express them seems to be the key to raising happy, well-rounded, guys who can relate to others in a healthy way.
For mothers, this is a book that can make a huge difference in how they deal with their sons - for the better. It will give them valuable insights into how their sons think and feel and demystify a lot of otherwise puzzling behavior. For fathers, it can explain a lot about their own upbringing and show them how to break unhealthy emotional patterns with their boys. And for teachers, coaches and mentors, this book can be the difference between unexplained behavior problems and positive strides forward.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Even if you don't have boys, it's still a pretty fascinating read.
