The Diva Review:
This is the second Mickey Haller book. The Lincoln Lawyer was so popular that Connelly brought Haller back for another run. In kind of a cool plot device, Connelly brings Harry Bosch into the story. It's sort of like Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino together in Heat. But this is about books, not movies…so…moving on.
Jerry Vincent, a defense attorney that Haller has not spoken to in years is murdered. As a complete surprise, the entire law firm is left to Haller. This could be Haller's big opportunity to get back into the game after a hiatus. Or, it could be too much, too soon. Vincent is about to start a huge, high profile, big money trial. A big-name Hollywood mogul is accused of murdering his wife and her lover and all evidence points to his guilt. It now falls to Haller to get this truly unlikable guy off. But was Vincent's murder associated with the case? Certain clues suggest that things might be more complicated than they seem.
Harry Bosch shows up to solve Vincent's murder and, predictably, bumps heads with Haller. It's kind of interesting to see Bosch through someone else's eyes. I thought he was pretty much of an arrogant jerk and found him to be really tiresome. Many Bosch fans disagree, and would be scandalized by my opinion, but there you have it. There are a nice number of twists and turns false leads and red herrings and eventually the story wraps up nicely.
This was back up to Connelly's standard. It was well thought out, the characters were well developed and the story was strong. It wouldn't surprise me to see Bosch and Haller come together again in another book.
