The Diva Review:
The Red Reaper is back. It is four years after the end of the first book in the series and Cat is now killing vamps for the government. She has lost the innocence that was endearing in the first book, but she still has much of the humor and personality from before.
Cat trains and leads the best of the best from all walks of life with the sole purpose of investigating, finding and killing vampires. These men have been working with Cat for the last few years and have developed respect for the half-human/half-vampire. This is a nice concept, secret quasi-military organization under Homeland Security that fight vampires. How would the government go about doing this for real? I would think that they would do it similar to the way Ms. Frost envisioned it, especially if they had a red-headed killing machine like Cat is.
But remember this was not her idea. She was forced into giving up her free-style ways in the last book as well as the only person she ever loved, the vampire that trained her, Bones. And Cat misses Bones, A LOT! Seems like the first part of the book is all about how she misses the man, er, vampire she left (albeit for his own good). But all in all she seems to have adapted and even enjoys her new life.
And now an interesting note on the weaknesses of vampires. No, I am not talking about a stake through the heart. I am talking about sex. Show a vampire something sexy with a pulse and they seem to lose all the wisdom and intelligence that decades or even centuries may have given them. Personally I think I got over that before I left my teens, but not vampires, the mere thought of dinner and a show wrapped up in one sexy package makes them complete idiots. Yes, the sex is still steamy in this book as in the last as well as the romance factor.
I liked One foot in the Grave a bit more then I did the first in the series and I do plan on reading the next book. I felt the characters had more depth and the powers and politics of vampires were explored a bit more, adding depth to the race as a whole. Another solid 4 star read that I think many will not want to put down once they are into it.
